Founding partner and Managing Director
David Trafford is an experienced consultant, mentor and executive who over the past 30 years has developed the skills and insights needed to help individuals, teams and boards deliver successful change, specifically technology-enabled transformation.
After starting his career as a craft apprentice with the English Electric Company, David was awarded a first class honours degree in electrical engineering. He then moved to Cranfield University as the Royal Commission for Great Exhibition of 1851 Research Fellow, where he undertook research into computer-aided design. It was during this period that his focus shifted to the broader application of information technology in organisations, specifically how its use could provide sustained competitive advantage.
In 1987, following a meeting with Kenneth Baker (the then Government Minister for Information Technology) and Lord Chilver, the Vice Chancellor of Cranfield University, he was invited to become a founding director of the Cranfield IT Institute, an independent institute that combined the disciplines of computer science and management to bring competitive advantage to organisations through the application of emerging information technologies.
In 1992 he moved into mainstream consulting, initially with Butler Cox and then CSC Index where he was responsible for developing client capability in IT transformation and business reengineering. Prior to forming Formicio in 2010, David was Executive Vice President and European Managing Director of nGenera (formally The Concours Group), a US-led research, management consultancy and executive education business.
Throughout his career David has worked with people on both sides of IT: business executives who want to improve their business through application of the technology, and IT executives who are expected to deliver new IT applications whilst maintaining the legacy IT landscape.
Most recently he has advised and provided independent oversight to executive teams and Boards on major transformation programmes, particularly from the point of view of assessing whether the conditions for success are in place. Increasingly his focus has been on organisations that either aim to create a truly digital business, or to make their existing business more digitally enabled.
During his academic and consulting career, he has advised companies in China, Australia, South Africa, Singapore, the USA, and Europe on all aspects of technology-led transformation.

- The Changing Role of Leaders for the Digital Age. A chapter co-authored with Frank Dannenhauer and Peter Boggis, in The Palgrave Handbook of Managing Continuous Business Transformation.
David has a PhD in the design of complex IT systems and is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
